Cable Drums
Garage Door Cable Drums
Cable drums are important for torsion spring garage doors. They are like wheels with grooves. The garage door cables are attached to the bottom of the door and wound around the cable drums. This helps the door open and close smoothly.
When the door closes, the torsion spring is tightly wound, storing energy. This energy helps the door balance its weight and open and close easily. When the door is triggered to open, the torsion spring unwinds, releasing the stored energy. The cables unwind from the cable drums, reducing tension and allowing the door to lift with less force. When the door closes again, the cables wind back around the cable drums, maintaining tension in the torsion spring. This keeps the cables aligned and allows for smooth movement.
To keep the cable drums working well, regular maintenance like lubrication, inspection, and adjustment is recommended.
Different types of torsion spring setups need specific cable drums based on the door's height and headroom. We offer normal headroom cable drums. If your garage door is 8 feet tall or shorter, use the D400-96 Cable Drums. For garage doors between 8 feet 1 inch and 12 feet 1 inch, use the D400-144 Cable Drums. Note that our cable drum sets include a pair of drums. These cable drums are designed to make your door work well and reliably.
